Handcycling Basics

Throughout my experience so far, several people have asked me about handcycling in general, what it is, how it works, etc. So in order to bring everyone interested up to speed, here is a brief overview of handcycling and some answers to frequently asked questions about it.

What is a handcycle?

A handcycle is a  three wheeled land vehicle powered by the arms using a crank, they are also called handbikes.

When was handcycling created?

The sport of handcycling was established in the 80’s with a goal to create new kinds of exercise vehicles for people to enjoy.

Who can participate in handcycling?

Thousands across the world participate in handcycling, and it is an exciting activity for people with a physical limitation, restricted balance, or anyone just looking to try a new sport. Handcyclists can either ride competitively in various racing opportunities, or just for recreational and exercise purposes.

Why try handcycling?

Handcycling is a great way to improve heart health, Build strength, compete, or simply enjoy time with family and friends. Handcycling has had continued growth since its creation and was first included in the paralympics in 2004. Numerous cycling events and competitions have started to integrate handcycling divisions.  Off road models of handcycles have even been developed for people who want to ride on steep hills or through rough environments.

More about handcycles

Handcycling models are being frequently updated with newer versions using lightweight cycling technology to increase agility and speed. There are several different kinds of handcycles with a range of options to choose what suits the riders needs. The level of recline depends on the riders preferences, but most racing models are placed in an almost horizontal position to reduce wind resistance.

I hope this post will help answer any questions about handcycling in general, but if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
