Dealing With Sports Injuries, Part 2

As I have come to find out, experiencing sports injuries can slow down training progress, which tends to be a little disheartening. However, when taken care of properly, it is possible to come out on top of an injury and get back to your workouts. Even though some injuries are not preventable, there are a few things you can do to remain healthy and prepare yourself for when injuries do come.  In this post, I will discuss the rest of the tips on how you can deal with sports or workout related injuries and get back to your exercise in no time.

Treating Injuries

When you are active, sometimes injuries are inevitable. It is important to know how to take care of your specific injury in order to heal as quickly as possible. For many common sports injuries, like a sprained ankle, rest and ice can make a huge difference. On the other hand, some chronic pain like soreness, stiffness, and joint pain will benefit from heat therapy.

Give it time

If you do become injured, one of the most difficult, but most important things you can do is give it time to heal. Otherwise, you may end up making your injury worse and prolonging your necessary recovery time. Depending on your injury, you may be able to incorporate a new workout that does not use the affected area. For example, you may be able to swim or lift weights instead of run or bike.

Be sure to listen to your body when recovering. When in doubt, always check with your doctor to make sure you know how to handle your injury properly. Sometimes more drastic measures like physical therapy may be needed. If you aren’t feeling ready, take things slow so you don’t make things worse.

Stay Flexible

Once you have recovered from an injury, be sure to add prevention techniques, like stretching, into your exercise. Building your flexibility is just as important as building strength and stamina. You will have less injuries in your future when you take the time to properly stretch your muscles.
